Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things, therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the Lord
will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness, and lacking
everything. And he will put a yoke of iron on your neck until he has
destroyed you.
Deuteronomy 28:47-48
Is enjoying God optional? Is gladness in God only for those who are "super-spiritual"? This text from Deuteronomy teaches that the answers to these questions is a resounding, "No". Through Moses the Lord is communicating to his people, Israel, how they are to live. They should expect blessings if they follow the Lord and curses if they turn away from him. However, the path of obedience is to be walked not by those who are begrudging, legalistic, and disengaged.. Rather, our service to the Lord is to be full of joy, gladness, and delight. It is not enough just to serve the Lord, we are do to so with affections being stirred by him. Lord, help me to prefer obedience, to enjoy walking within your commands, and finding delight in your Word.
"Delight yourself in the Lord . . . " Psalm 37:4.
